WHAT’S UP WITH SOCIAL MEDIA & BIG TECH

🤯 Listening to this podcast episode was really eye-opening, and I had a truly *mind-blown emoji* moment when the guest said “Tiktok isn’t competing with Facebook or Twitter, they’re competing with Amazon.”

📲 I am forever raging against short-form video, even when I get sucked into it! This piece articulates it well.

😵‍💫 This targeted campaign against Hasan Piker was harrowing to read about and honestly makes me fearful for the future of the internet.

💾 This very cool website is helping me learn how digital tech actually works. Because touch screens are magic, but also … they’re engineering.

⛳️ This piece is obviously aligned with Off the Grid ==» “Carleigh Beriont is running for Congress as an ‘anti-social Democrat’ and she thinks the party needs to abandon social media nationally also.”

🚫 If you want to break up with your phone… please let me recommend this very cool Cellular Balance Workbook by Rachel Herring.

✅ And while I’m here with the cool PDFs… I bought this Dopamine Detox workbook from Yrsa Daley-Ward this month, and I’m really grateful for it.

THE UTTER PAPERS: YOUR 30 DAY DOPAMINE DETOX
I’ve been at it again. Here at the utter HQ, I’ve begun creating PDFs that help people restore focus, regulate emotions, reclaim their attention, and open up new possibilities in their lives. Here's the latest offering.

ONLINE BIZ & CONTENT CREATION

🧱 I started using a Brick this month to turn off access to my email apps after the work day. So far it’s been… a mixed bag? But I’m curious if anyone else here loves or hates their Brick? How do you use it? Please tell me in the comments! (And if you’re curious about getting one, here’s my link for 10% off).

🤔 Are podcasters the ultimate influencers? Or are we something else?

📉 Maybe Annual Recurring Revenue is a lie as well?

🌺 I am 100% obsessed with this cool book/project from Christie George. It’s part book report on Jenny Odell’s How to do Nothing and part totally original creative endeavor.

👀 Speaking of self-publishing… my journey had me reading this research paper on Bestseller lists with eyes WIDE open.

📌 Flyers are BACK and I am HERE FOR IT! I’ve been scheming about some printed-matter-marketing workshops for the Interweb next year, and this feels like a glimmer of yes.

🐦‍🔥 Ethan Hawke coming through with the truth about creativity!

✂️ I can’t stop thinking about this essay on anti-elitism by Kyle Chayka, especially this part:

Celebrities all have podcasts where they interview other, even more famous, celebrities — see Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang.” And we listen to them, reinforcing their fame. … To be anti-elitist, however, is to stop caring about attention as a metric of quality, because those who already have it will always win. It requires caring about the people who aren’t on magazine covers and don’t have hundreds of thousands of followers. It requires engaging in smaller-scale, more private, and more coherent efforts — the community of friends and collaborators, people whose opinion you respect (as opposed to the passive hoards of onlookers and bots). Newsletters are a part of this, as is throwing your own parties.
🟧 The revenge of elitism
This season of America sucks!!! I was reminded of this as I watched a trio of heavily armed National Guard troops patrol DC’s 18th Street in the middle of the afternoon on a weekday, as if the president had sent the army in to occupy SoHo and arrest anyone buying Vuori. My only optimism comes from people still continuing to write and create things that …

And finally…

BABES LEAVING SOCIAL MEDIA

You know I absolutely love to see more and more folks interrogating social media, and I bookmark it every time I clock it. This section is where I share those pieces for boosts of encouragement to make changes you might be desiring. If you create a piece of your own, please send it to me, and I’ll include it!

🛍️ I love the anti-ecommerce ethos of this shop in Brooklyn! Long live the catalog!

👩‍💻 An honest reflection on four months off social media from Sophie Noel.

📚 Definitely noticing that some of my fave Booktubers are leaving Youtube for more curated, members-only platforms like Bindery and Patreon.

📲 These essays from Kristen Drozdowski and Alex McGinness are both very kind reflections on my book, but also great recaps of their time off social media!
